What is Scouting...Can My Son Join?

What is Cub Scouts & how does it work?

Cub Scouts is a year-round program with focused Den and Pack activities and learning opportunities from September to May, with an annual campout and summer fun planned in the months of June - August. The program year begins in September, however boys can join throughout the year.  The program offers fun activities, service projects, ceremonies, and games that promote character development, citizenship, and physical fitness.

Family involvement is an essential part of Cub Scouting, and parents are encouraged to play an active role in the program.  Through interaction with parents, leaders, and friends, boys learn cooperation, compassion, and courage.  This family- and community-centered approach to learning means that Cub Scouting is truly time well spent.

What are the ages for Cub Scouting?

Cub Scouting is designed for boys entering 1st through 5th grades in the fall, generally ages 7-11. Each den is divided by grade level as follows:

1st Grade is Tigers
2nd Grade is Wolves
3rd Grade is Bears
4th & 5th Grades are Webelos, which stands for "We'll be Loyal Scouts". Once a boy is halfway through 5th grade, they can choose to move on and join Boy Scouts.

Kindergarteners are welcome to join at each summer's Campout.

How much does it cost to participate?

  • $24 - Registration Cost (BSA Fees. This is the only component transferable between Packs/Units)
  • $50 - Pack Activity & Programming Cost
  • $100 - Fundraising Fee
  • $59 - Approximate Uniform Expense (Shirt, Hat, Belt, and Required Badges)
  • $12 - (Optional) Boys Life Magazine
  • $40 - (Optional) Activities cost for Parents (Cubs cost is always covered for these.  Parents and non-Cub Scout siblings pay their way)

What does a Cub Scout do?

Pack Events - Once a month, generally on the last Monday of the month, the entire Pack meets to complete group activities, e.g. community service, present recognition and awards, compete in the Pinewood Derby, take night hikes, etc.  Additional fall and spring activities and participation in the Polar Bear Plunge on New Year's Day are also completed.

Den Activities - One to two times per month, the individual dens meet to complete thematic elements required for advancement to the next program level.
